Watch for Negative Minimum Payments

I mentioned this a few weeks ago but my daugher just showed me her credit card statement and it's worth mentioning again.

With a balance of $2584 it showed a minimum payment of $21. However, last month's finance charges were $35.61 and would be just a little less this month.

If she paid the minimum payment she would owe about $14 more next month than she does now.

This is just one more reason why it's so important to actually look at your statements each month.

That's all for now. Remember, I really enjoy hearing from you folks. If you have any comments, complaints, suggestions or just want to say Hi, please send me an email to mailto:tre2000@budgetstretcherpremium.com.

All the best,
Grandpa Terry

Subscriber Tip (1)

Since we don't travel out of our community too often and cannot afford a newer more reliable car, on the rare occasion that we have to travel a long distance we rent a economy car and use our AAA auto club discount. We find this cheaper than a new car payment and we don't have the worry of will the car make it there and back.

For in town or in community travel we have AAA towing service if our car fails us, but we don't want to be 2-1/2 hours from home in our older car and need towing service back home.

So not only do we find this affordable, but it also gives you peace of mind.

Grandpa Terry's Tip of the Week

Sometimes It Hurts

I remember when my kids were growing up that my wife and I wanted to buy them everything they wanted. That was a little hard since we could barely make ends meet with the bare necessities.

When Christmas or birthdays rolled around we always managed to get them something nice but we would pay for it for months.

Talking to my kids now they seem to think that we did ok by them, and even spoiled them at times.

As a parent and now a grandparent I know all too well the feeling of not being able to buy what you want for your family. It's a feeling of hurt mixed in with a little shame that you can't give more.

I would like for you to think about something for a minute.

When I was 12 my Dad was out of work due to an injury and (believe it or not) we were living on a $54 a month disability pension he received. That Christmas I got a wallet bought with Green Stamps (most of you won't remember them).

Although that's been 48 years ago it's the only Christmas I remember vividly. Why is that?

I believe it's because Mom and Dad told us that things were tight financially and that we may not get anything. My sister and I knew they had done their best.

If you are considering running your credit cards to the breaking point this Christmas you may want to think about it long and hard. Talk to your kids and let them know the situation. Maybe December 25th, 2007 will be their fondest memory of Christmas too!

Clean out storage closets to take inventory of items that you may have forgotten about. Many of us buy more baggies, cleaners, shoe protectants, spackle or whatever because we forgot that we still have some left or the item was out of sight when we attempted to locate it. Getting organized also gives you the opportunity to donate or sell unwanted or forgotten items at a yard sale offering further income or a tax donation.

Grandpa Terry's Email

Hello Grandpa Terry,

My husband and I just received in the mail that one of our credit cards that we paid off will now have an annual fee of $75.00 starting this month. I want to cancel the card to avoid the extra charge and we don't use it anymore. My concern is that if I cancel it will it hurt our credit? We just got the letter 9/06/07 and it stated that it would be on our Sept bill-can they do that too without enough notice?

Love all your info and help,

Ronda

My Response:

Hi Ronda,

I would go ahead and cancel the card to avoid the annual fee. It could have a small negative affect on your credit score but it may be worth it to save that $75 a year. When you call them make sure that they don't already have the fee charged. If they do have them remove it.

The terms of the card should list how much notice they are required to give you on any changes. Each card company is a little different.

I hope this helps,
Grandpa Terry

I don't know how I ever lived without Borax. I use it to clean the metal filter on my range hood. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup in hot water to soak it clean, no scrubbing! It is a great laundry booser for very dirty clothes. My favorite use is to clean the shower. Mix with a little water to make a paste to remove shower scum and mold. One product many uses.

Health and Beauty Tips

~~To stretch your shampoo pour half of bottle into empty bottle, and add water to fill both. You have twice as much now, and it will work just the same.

~~Free fingernail brush - When washing your hair, before you rinse off the shampoo run your fingernails through your hair a few times. Then rinse.

~~Bee Stings - Remove stinger if there is any and dampen area and put Meat Tenderizer on area. Just leave awhile.

~~Facial Moisturizer - Petroleum jelly makes a great moisturizer. Wash your face and while it is still wet apply a tiny amount of jelly. Continue rubbing in a circular motion adding very warm water until jelly is spread evenly. Your skin will be soft and non-greasy even in the winter.
