Subscriber Tip
Good morning
I really enjoy your newsletter but I don't remember seeing this
tip when grocery shopping.
I work shift work so it's easier for me. I hope it will help
someone else too. I try to get my groceries first thing in the
morning, shortly after the store opens. Within the first half
hour to an hour. You can save quite a bit on meat. The store
puts out the meat that was packaged the day before and there is
nothing wrong with it. Most times, the "last day of sale" meat
is okay but I always check the color. At the two regular
grocery stores I shop at (within two blocks of each other), I
can save $5-$7 on a roast. I only look when I know they're on
sale to start with as I'm on a tight budget for groceries.
Marinating steaks are easiest to get a couple of dollars off or
30% next day. Great for stir fries. I can save on average about
$10 a week this way.
Have a great day. Hope I helped. God bless.

Coupon Savings
by Michelle Jones
If it's been a while since you've used grocery coupons at the
store and you're feeling like you just don't have time to get
started again (as even in my case this month with our recent
move to Atlanta) don't give up! It's never too late to pick
those coupon flyers out of the Sunday paper—which hopefully
you've at least set aside in case you CAN make the time to cut
them out—and get started saving tons of money again… NOW! After
just a few weeks of shopping without them I am once again
reminded of how ridiculous it is to not be using the coupons,
especially on items I am purchasing anyway. So remember, it's
never too late to get started again, just do it!!!
Save hundreds of dollars on your groceries each month, with
or without using coupons! Read more of Michelle's FREE

Grandpa Terry's Tip of the Week
Money Is A Family Affair
If you are single and don't have kids this tip won't mean much
to you. For the rest of us that have others to consider when
making money decisions it just may make things a little easier.
I guess the best knock-down, drag-out fights my wife and I ever
had was about money. No, it never came to blows because she's
meaner than I am. Believe me you can have a lot of fights in
almost 42 years.
At some point we realized that it wasn't accomplishing
anything. We still didn't have any money but we never earned a
nickel fighting about it.
To get a handle on your finances it is going to take a team
effort. The whole family has to be working in the same
direction.
My suggestion would be to sit down and talk your money
situation over with your spouse and the kids. It's important for
everybody in the family to know what is going on.
You may be surprised at what the kids will come up with.
When I bought my first house I made a miscalculation on how
much I would need to come up with for the down payment. When I
realized it we had maxed out our credit cards and wasn't sure
where we would get the rest of the money.
My wife and I discussed this with the kids and they offered to
baby-sit and mow lawns. They came up with enough to cover the
down payment. I'll never forget how proud that made them feel
and how proud we were of them.
All too often one person in the family is strapped with making
the money decisions. This is a great idea and the best way to
keep things organized but they shouldn't take all the blame when
something doesn't work out.
A family solves difficult problems everyday. Money is just one
of them.

Subject: Woman With Payday Loan
I read that this woman closed her checking account that was on
file with the payday loan company and then opened a new checking
account to "keep their hands off my income."
This is a terrible idea. The payday loan companies know all the
tricks that people use in order to keep from paying off the
debt. All your reader has done is put herself in the position of
being sued by the payday loan company.
She needs to go and talk to the loan company and explain the
circumstances. They may be willing to work with her, but they
certainly will NOT work with her if she is being deceptive.
She should then contact a reputable company that specializes in
repayment of consumer debt, such as Consumer Credit Counseling.
They may be able to help her by contacting the payday loan
company and setting up a reasonable repayment schedule and may
also be able to get the interest frozen.

Dear Grandpa Terry,
I have been receiving your newsletter for a couple of years
now. I really put your budget system into action this past year.
May I say, "WOW". What a difference!! Now onto my question. I am
a stay at home mom, which obviously doesn't have retirement
benefits. I receive a small ($110.34) check every month that was
part of an accident settlement. I would like to know the best
way to invest this and it not be too expensive or complicated.
It currently goes into savings every month, but I feel there
must be a better way to make this money work for me. Any advice
is appreciated.
Thanks,
MAGS
My Response:
Hi MAGS,
I'm glad your budget system is working for you.
Keeping in mind that I'm not an investment advisor, I do have a
couple of suggestions for your monthly check.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with Paypal but they have one
of the easiest Money Markets accounts I've come across. They are
currently paying 5.02% on your money and you have access to it
anytime you like. All you have to do is setup a free account at
Paypal and then sign up for their Money Market account. Then you
can register your bank account with them and transfer the money
to your account each month. Your dividends are added to your
account around the 1st of the month. I have my short term
savings with them.
On the downside, they are not federally insured so you could
lose money. Please read everything they have on the account
before you take action
I'm sure you have seen the ads for ING! They are all over. They
also offer a good rate on their money market accounts and as I
understand it they are federally insured. You can check them out
at:
The best part about both of these programs there are no minimum
deposits, even the initial deposit.
I hope this helps,
Grandpa Terry

Hi Grandpa Terry,
As I was looking thru the site I read the info under "Your
Consumer Rights". This question kind of falls within that area.
I thought that somewhere in the past 6 months or so I read
(somewhere) that if you are in need of a copy of your medical
records from your MD and you can't afford it that by law, they
must give you one (1) copy at no charge. Is this true? Where
could I find out about it?
Again, Thank you. All of your time effort and passion for The
Budget Stretcher is worth much more than what we pay, Bless you.
Nancy
My Response:
Hi Nancy,
I think I've found what you are referring to. Here is a link to
a web site that states that you can get a free copy of your
medical records from The Medical Information Bureau (MIB) once
per year if you have records on file with them.
I can't find anything that states the doctors are required to
provide your records free.
I hope this helps,
Grandpa Terry
-------
Grandpa Terry,
I currently have $6, 395 of credit card debt and I want to
transfer two of my credit cards to a 0% APR until Dec 2007 on a
Discover card. What would you suggest I should do? Thanks for
your help. I didn't know I had that much credit card debt until
I wrote it down on one of your forms!
Zelda
My Response:
Hi Zelda,
Transferring your credit cards to a 0% card would be a good
idea, however, make sure they will transfer the entire amount.
This may require that you contact them by phone instead of by
mail or online application.
When paying the payments on this credit card always send as
much as you can. Even if you can only start out with the minimum
payment (say about $160) then pay that amount even if the
minimum payment is reduced. In most cases this will pay the card
off in about half the time.
Most of us never know how much we owe until we actually write
it down. It can be a real eye opener.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
All the best,
Grandpa Terry

Hey Grandpa Terry,
Did you know that olive oil deteriorates from light? My Grandma
always bought hers in cans, but I never thought about it until I
read this on a cooking site. I researched and it is repeated
where ever they write about storage of olive oil. Tinted glass,
porcelain or stainless steel containers only for maximum health
benefits and freshness. So much for those pretty clear glass
bottles!

One thing I do to save money on detergent is I wash all my
cleaning rags at one time by themselves. I don't use any
detergent (they already have cleaners on them) and I dry them
with no fabric softener as this can adds streaks to things such
as windows. It saves on detergents and fabric softeners. The
cleaning rags always come out clean and residue free. The only
cleaners I use is window cleaners and an all purpose cleaner so
I don't worry about mixing the cleaners in the wash. I just
keep a bag beside the washing machine to put them in until I get
a small load.

These Tips provided by The Frugal Shopper
1. When washing dark clothes for the first time
use cold water and put salt in the water. The
salt helps set the color. To brighten dark clothes
after they have been washed several times, repeat
the procedure.
2. Black clothing tends to look brown after several
washings. To restore the black color, add coffee
or strong tea to the rinse water.
3. Many garments labeled "Dry Clean Only" can be
safely hand washed using mild soap like Woolite and
cold water.
