Regarding stores that double coupons. I made a special trip to
Eagle one time when they offered double-couponing and noticed
that their price on plastic wrap was $3.59 with a doubled
coupon. I had a coupon for 50-cents so they would take off $1.00
making my purchase $2.59. Now, keeping a price book, I saw that
my closer-in store was selling that plastic wrap for $2.59 & my
50-cent coupon would make the item sell at $2.09. So, watch out
for store mark-ups with double coupons and keep a price book so
you know what's a good deal.

Grandpa Terry's Email
Hi Grandpa Terry,
I want to say thank you so much for your prayers and the
prayers of everyone who prayed for my son-in-law in Mexico. They
gave him his visa today. We were told that they won't give him a
visa on the spot, that it would take 6 to 12 months for the
decision. Well, guess what God answered all those prayers and he
is coming home.
Thanks Again,
Cheryl

Infant cough/cold medicines recalled
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Johnson & Johnson, Wyeth and other makers
of infants' nonprescription cough and cold products are
recalling certain medicines in the United States because of the
danger of overdose, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association
said on Thursday.
Novartis and Prestige Brands Holdings are recalling their oral
infant cough and cold medicines, as well, because data show that
when the medicines are misused, it can lead to overdose,
especially in children under 2 years old.
At least three chain stores said they are pulling over-the
counter infant cold and cough medicines from their shelves: CVS
Pharmacy, the retail unit of CVS Caremark Corp, Stop & Shop
Supermarket Co LLC and Giant Food LLC.
A spokeswoman for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association,
a trade group representing makers of over-the-counter medicines,
said overdoses have led to death and serious injury in rare
instances, but stressed the medications are safe when used as
directed.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration reviewers have said that from
1969 through 2006 the agency received 54 reports of deaths with
decongestants and 69 with antihistamines. Most were in children
younger than 2. Overdose and drug toxicity were commonly
reported in those cases, they said.
FDA reviewers have recommended that over-the-counter cough and
cold medicines that contain decongestants and antihistamines
should come with new instructions saying they are not
recommended for very young children.
The FDA has not made a final decision on whether to change the
warnings or instructions on the widely used drugs until it gets
input from outside advisers who are to meet October 18-19.
Questions have been raised about the safety of nonprescription
cough and cold products in children and whether the benefits
justify any potential risks, especially in children under 2
years of age.
"At this point, the studies that have been done show no benefit
and we do have reported, although rare, bad outcomes, " said Dr.
Richard Gorman, chair of the American Pediatrics section on
clinical pharmacological and therapeutic studies, and a
pediatrician in Baltimore.
A group of doctors and public health officials had filed a
petition with the FDA voicing concern over the drugs.
"There are no good studies that provide any information about
appropriate dosing if they did work, " said Dr. Steven Czinn,
chair of the department of pediatrics at the University of
Maryland School of Medicine and a signer of the petition.
"In the 21st century, it is unacceptable to be marketing
medication to infants and children that may not work, " Czinn
said.
The FDA has been reviewing the issue for over a year, said Dr.
Joel Schiffenbauer of the FDA's office of nonprescription
products. In August, the agency advised against using the
medicines in children under 2 unless a doctor gives specific
instructions.
Officials will ask the advisory panel if the products are
appropriate in children up to age 12, Schiffenbauer told a
conference call with reporters. FDA action could follow the
advisory meeting.
FDA reviewers have said the product labels "should include
prominent language to describe the risk of overdose in
children." They also recommended dropping the statement on many
over-the-counter remedies urging parents to "consult a
physician" about use of decongestants in children under 2 and
antihistamines in children under 6.
Medicines that are being recalled from the U.S. market include:
Concentrated Infants' TYLENOL Drops Plus Cold;
Concentrated Infants' TYLENOL Drops Plus Cold & Cough;
PEDIACARE Infant Drops Decongestant (PSE);
PEDIACARE Infant Drops Decongestant & Cough (PSE);
PEDIACARE Infant Dropper Decongestant (PE);
PEDIACARE Infant Dropper Long-Acting Cough;
PEDIACARE Infant Dropper Decongestant & Cough (PE) products;
Dimetapp Decongestant Plus Cough Infant Drops;
Dimetapp Decongestant Infant Drops;
Little Colds Decongestant Plus Cough;
Little Colds Multi-Symptom Cold Formula;
Robitussin Infant Cough DM Drops;
Triaminic Infant & Toddler Thin Strips Decongestant
Triaminic Infant & Toddler Thin Strips Decongestant Plus Cough.
NOTE FROM ME: the last time the FDA recalled something, they all
showed up at flea markets and discount stores. THAT...could be
dangerous! I was working as Asst Mgr in a Walmart Pharmacy. It
was a big event with big caution flags.

Hello Grandpa Terry,
Just thought I'd let you know just how much I truly enjoy being
a subscriber to the Budget Stretcher Premium and reading your
weekly newsletter. Something I started doing shortly after I
became a subscriber was to bookmark the links you provided after
opening them to see what they were about. I even set up a
totally separate folder titled "Grandpa Terry" and bookmark
those websites/pages specifically to this folder. That way, if I
need to go back for whatever reason to reread something, it's
readily available instead of having to think over and over, "Now
where did I see this on his website?" The latest one I just
added just before writing this email is the link for a living
will (Project Grace). I believe everyone should have one of
these whether we have family or not, assets or not.
Thank you for providing such a useful tool (BSP) filled with so
many different topics that I'm sure many need for whatever
reasons they do. You can bet I will be renewing next July so I
can continue to enjoy reading, learning and implementing the
topics that affect me personally.

Hi-
I too, continue to get ads for Eden Pure. It sounded too good
to be true and you know that old adage-if it sounds too good to
be true it probably is. I research stuff, especially if
expensive. Here is one site with reviews from people who
purchased them.
I also found that they advertise an Eden Pure Air Purifier-a
Apparently this product is being referred to the Federal Trade
Commission for basically false claims in advertising. Between
these two website/reviews needless to say I didn't buy one!
Hope this is helpful.

Hi,
I love your newsletters, I set a goal for myself to be debt
free by the end of this year, my husband had lost his job and I
am a stay at home mom, Well hubby found another job but way less
then what he was making so I made some settlement offers on some
old credit card bills, now 8 mos later I am still getting bills
on one of the accts I settled on, what can I do to stop this and
is this normal, I get a bill from a saying I still owe, I send
in the proof I settled on acct they then sell this acct to
another collector and I repeat send in all info then they sell
it, it is a non ending cycle of collectors and harassment.
My Response:
Hi,
Bill collectors can't harass you by federal law especially on a
debt that is not owed. I would sit down and write the latest
collector a letter and threaten to file a complaint with the
Federal Trade Commission if this doesn't stop. Make sure to
follow through if they persist.
Here is the link that will explain how to file that complaint:
I would certify the letter with a return receipt.
I hope this helps,
Terry

Every time we buy a used car, we also purchase a Chilton's or
Haynes manual for the car. By talking to people who know how to
repair cars and using these manuals, my husband has learned how
to do far more than only change the oil, in the 19 years we've
been married. He has used the manuals to help diagnose problems
and has changed sensors, belts, etc. that he didn't even
previously know existed. This has saved us hundreds of dollars
each year and given him a confidence that he never had before in
working on vehicles.

While shopping for a washer & dryer, I learned some interesting
facts. A top loader washer uses 45 gallons of water per wash. A
front loader uses 15 gallons water per wash. The spin on the
frontload washer is much faster then the top loader. That means
it takes less time to dry clothes. My washer & dryer cost a
little more than the typical washer & dryer, but I figure I will
save more in the long run on my utilities bills.

A VA Loan can keep High Interest Rates Away
In today's housing market there are a record number of
foreclosures throughout every state. Don't be a part of the
growing number of Americans staring foreclosure in the face and
obtain a loan insured by the federal government.
The VA offers many great benefits to those that have served our
country and are looking to purchase their first home. A
for veterans who are first time home purchasers with little
credit to poor credit to obtain a competitive interest rate. If
you currently have a VA Loan you may also look into a
that loan to help save you money with your mortgage to receive
the best rate.

These Tips provided by The Frugal Shopper
Please show your appreciation for these great tips by visiting
this site.
~~Shop for items BEFORE you run out of them. If you run out of
an item you'll have to pay whatever the store is charging that
week.
~~Due to volume discounts, larger stores are generally cheaper
than smaller ones.
~~Avoid trips to the "corner store".
~~Make a grocery list during the week. Take it with you when
you shop. Stick to it.
~~If you go to the supermarket early in the morning (before
9am) you have a better chance of getting mark down items. Local
stores in my area mark down fresh veggies and fruits, frozen
items, milks, and meats.
~~Shop alone - this will save lots of money and frustration.
