Grandpa Terry's Tip of the Week
I thought I would dig out an old article of mine that may help
with Christmas just around the corner.
Are You An Impulse Buyer?
Impulse buying is simply defined as making an unplanned
purchase. This can be an extra pack of cookies when grocery
shopping or buying a car on a whim. Most of us are guilty of
this at one time or another. Even though the term is simple, it
probably accounts for the majority of money problems family's
have.
Planning a purchase of any kind is absolutely necessary if you
intend to use your money wisely. That extra pack of cookies I
mentioned isn't going to break your budget, but with the prices
of groceries today, it doesn't take too many items to put a dent
in your grocery allowance. However, buying a car without prior
planning can get very expensive. Besides the obvious things like
finding the best purchase price and interest rate, down payment,
money for taxes and license, etc., you need time to decide which
car is right for your family.
The below list of tips may help prevent impulse buying:
If you see something you like, leave the store without it. Go
home and look at your budget. Then if you feel you can afford
it, go back. In addition, this will give you time to think about
whether you really need it.
Always go to the grocery store or dollar store with a list. Buy
just what is on your list. If you see items you would like to
have, make a note to put them on your list for your next trip.
Always consider the entire price of an item before buying. In
my state, if you buy a car that costs $20, 000, you have to pay
about 7% in sales taxes within 30 days of the purchase. That
$1400 may not be that easy to come up with.
I know that the above ideas takes all the fun out of spending
your money. Planning and budgeting are about as dull as watching
grass grow. However, a family that budgets their money and plans
purchases, will no doubt be able to make more purchases and feel
much better about it.

Grandpa Terry's Email
Hi Grandpa Terry!
Congratulations on your grandson's graduation from Navy Boot
Camp! You must be very proud of him. Four generations of
military service is AWESOME! We all owe your family a big thank
you for being a part of keeping our country the greatest land on
Earth. Sometimes I think people forget that our freedom is not
free.
Changing the subject, would you please put a question out to
the other readers for me? Several years ago I took part in a
focus group and was paid for it. I would like to find - if they
really exist - focus groups and / or surveys that actually pay
you money. There are a lot of advertisements for paid focus
groups and paid surveys, but the only ones I have been able to
find either put your name in with thousands of others for a
drawing with a single prize, or give you points toward prizes
you don't want and wouldn't buy, or want you to sign up for
trial periods of things you wouldn't ordinarily buy. If anyone
knows of any surveys or focus groups where they actually pay you
cash in U.S. currency, I would love to know about it / them.

HI,
I just read the email about how hard it is to clean the grimy
bathtub....I have found that if we wipe the tub down after each
shower use(about 30/60 seconds) with our towel after we dry
ourselves off, it helps to keep the tub clean and sparkling in
between your weekly cleaning the tub.
Enjoy your newsletter.
Thanks,
Doris

Terry,
PLEASE tell Tammy not to stand in the shower and clean with the
typical chlorine bleach products. I can give her personal
experiences of friends who ended up with chemical poisoning that
has caused all kinds of health problems. There is currently a
movement in the US to ban chlorine bleach and all products
containing this toxic product. Bleach is the #1 most toxic
product in your home. If it will eat a hole in your clothes, so
imagine what it can do to your skin. There are safer
alternatives. Take a look at this site and it will give you more
information on chlorine, lye, formaldehyde and other common
household product ingredients.

Dear Budget Stretcher,
Have you ever heard of the Takeover Trader and a person by the
name of Louis Basenese. He is also supposed to be affiliated
with The Oxford Club in Baltimore, MD. I'm thinking of investing
with this man and I want to make sure he is a for real, honest
and legitimate person before I go handing over any money to him.
I would so appreciate it if you could tell me anything you may
know about him. I've not got a lot of time to act on this should
I decide it is a good thing for me to do. I've not been getting
the Budget Stretcher e-mail for very long but I really enjoy
reading it each time it comes in my e-mail. You cover everything
and I do appreciate it.
Thank You Sooo Much,
Debbie
My Response:
Hi Debbie,
No, I've never heard of the Takeover Trader or Louis Basenese.
I did a search and found his contact info. I would recommend
that you contact him and ask a few questions just to get a feel
for how he handles his business. If you don't receive a reply
don't put your money in.
I hope this helps,
Terry

Hi My name is Stephanie and I've been with you for over a year
or so, some free and now bsp. I received a tip from my appliance
man. My dishwasher was recalled an they ended up giving me a new
one because it was to much to fix. But he did manage to tell me
a little secret. Those dishwasher detergents that come in little
plastic bags and have balls inside, and the ones that are just
covered in plastic. Do not purchase those because he ends up
coming back and replacing the motor because it doesn't dissolve
all the way. Just use the liquid or powder so you don't need an
extra repair on your hands. Hope it helps.

Subscriber Tip #2
I have a great budget stretcher idea. I prefer not to use
aerosol sprays and other household air fresheners and use
candles, instead. After burning a votive candle to the bottom,
there is always a bit of wax left in the holder. I put the
candle holder in the freezer for easier removal of the remaining
wax and then save the wax in a mason jar. I use this jar to hold
candle scraps and it stays on my rear burner on the stove so
that each time the oven preheats, the scented wax melts and
releases the scent into the air. Well, last week, while the wax
was cooling back to a solid form, I stuck an ugly leftover
purple (Halloween) taper candle right down the middle and the
wax cooled around it, giving the "scrap" wax a new wick. The jar
was about half-filled with wax and I lit the candle Wednesday
morning, in a safe place, and it burned continuously until
Saturday night!!!!!! I have never had an expensive "jar candle"
last that long!
I have used this scrap jar for a very long time, but adding the
candle to is really made for a long-burning candle! It was
virtually free!

Subscriber Tip #3
Hi Grandpa Terry!
Here is a tip just in time for the day after Thanksgiving's
Black Friday shopping. Its good year round, but especially for
this time of year. Three web sites showing Black Friday
day-after-Thanksgiving ads now are (there are probably more):
electronics or any other big ticket item from one of the Black
found that at least one merchant was advertising a digital
camera I want for my freelance work at a price of $179.00. The
description sounded almost identical to the $350.00 model. The
only difference was the model number. When you go online and
check out the two model numbers, you see the camera that is
supposed to be a Black Friday Special can actually be had online
any time for $172.00. By doing just a few minutes of online
research from the comfort of home I was able to spare myself a
lot of hassle for something that wasn't as good a deal as it was
made out to be. Also check out the quality of the product at
Consumer Reports Online.
You can sign up for a one month membership for $6.00, which will
let you check anything you want during that time.
