INEXPENSIVE WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR HOME
By Jessica Ackerman

Often, a quick tidying up does wonders to make your home look clean and presentable. If you know that things are put away in their proper places, it reduces the stress of coming home to a messy abode. Having an organized home does not necessarily mean you have to go out and buy a new closet or drawers to add more storage space. In fact, it is usually the case that you can use existing space more creatively to solve your storage problems.

Boxes and Baskets

Magazines, children's toys, medication or vitamin bottles, and stationary are just some of the items that tend to be left lying around the house and add to the clutter. A simple solution is to place them in boxes or baskets. Thrift stores and clearance sections of home goods stores are great places to find inexpensive, attractive woven or canvas baskets. Larger ones look great on the floor beside furniture. You may even find wicker hampers that can store things like extra blankets or small pillows, while acting as side tables for placing drinks.

Cardboard boxes are keepers after the gift or purchased item has been taken out and used. Cut off the side flaps, wrap the exterior with colorful paper, add label tags, or use other creative ways to make the box both practical and attractive for use. Baskets can also be easily dressed up with ribbon or lined with cloth or doilies.

Shelving

Installing shelving on empty wall space or in your closet is a great way to make use of the vertical space otherwise left empty. Wire shelving is relatively inexpensive and can be fitted in your closet, pantry, laundry room, or other places where extra storage is needed. Modular shelving units are also great for stacking or placing in closets and can hold lighter items like shoes. Additionally, wall shelves are easy to install and do not cost much. You can decide how many you need and how to arrange them on your wall.

Behind-the-door organizers

The backs of closet and wardrobe doors can easily be missed as valuable spaces for storing your stuff. Organize items such as jewelry, shoes, accessories, and cosmetics in multi-pocket organizers that can be hung over the door.  If you are handy at sewing, this will be an easy project. Otherwise, inexpensive ones can be found at home improvement stores. You can also find plastic hooks that can be attached to the backs of doors or closet walls and come in very handy for hanging clothing and accessories.

Drawer organizers

For smaller items that need to be easily accessed, organize these in plastic trays that can be found at your local thrift or dollar stores. For an even cheaper solution, save take-out containers and food jars, or fashion your own containers out of small cardboard boxes. Organizing the interior of your kitchen or dresser drawers can really make a huge difference when it comes to finding what you need and maximizing space.
