Wanna Be a Thrifty Mom?

“Thrifty Mom”  Do those words make your head spin with visions of “supermom” who can whip up a meal and a new set of clothes out of nothing? Sometimes we do place way too many expectations on ourselves. BUT our role as moms is often to find ways to trim back the family budget. Today´s site has practical ideas to help you to just that.

Mommy Savers offers a site full of ideas on how to apply the thrifty wand to most of your life´s circumstances. You can find ideas to help you shop frugally. Learn how other moms have trimmed their family budget. Check out lots of bargain listings and even exchange ideas with other “thrifty moms”.

Seriously... if you are looking for ways to cut back (and who ISN´T), this is a great place to start. Since I´ve got holidays on the brain, I especially loved their holiday section. You will find ideas for homemade gifts, things the kids can do, how to decorate without spending a fortune and how to set and live by a holiday budget.

We are doing the homemade gift thing for most everyone on the list this year. We did it last year, and guess what... the recipients LOVED their gifts even more than if we had spent money on some gadget. Have your kids make something cute, add in some baked goodies or a family portrait. Do something personal that doesn´t cost a lot. It can be worth the time and hey, it´s even a fun family project.

You will get lots of great ideas you can use at Mommy Savers. So go take a peek...

Breast Cancer Prevention

Whether or not you know someone who has experienced breast cancer, I think it is a lingering fear for most women. You may never even voice it, but I imagine most of you have worried about it from time to time. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month so why don´t we all get a little more informed and empowered on this subject so we don´t have to live in fear.

Personally, I always think “I´m just 29, I can worry about this later”. But we all know that´s not a good tactic. Prevention, not procrastination, is what we need to focus on. Did you know that, “More than 90 percent of women whose breast cancer is found and treated early with no spreading beyond the breast, will survive.” That´s encouraging.

What can you do? Healthy living is one defense but monthly breast exams and annual mammograms are an important line of defense. Yes, we forget so easily or put it off, but it´s a habit we all need to establish.

A couple quick tips for healthy prevention:
- Eat more soy (Personally, I love the TruSoy snack bars)
- Eat more veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, etc.
- Drink green tea

If you want more information on breast cancer, information on how to do a self exam, ways you can safeguard against breast cancer, and so much more, then visit Locate a Doc´s special Breast Cancer section. You will find a wealth of information here. You can even send reminder e-cards to your friends and family.

A few other sites I suggest on this topic:

Sanity Savers  This site promotes a book for Canadian moms but there´s lots of great tidbits available for free. Their stress test is great.
