Grocery Saving Ideas
By Elizabeth Dunn

I had cut my grocery budget as low as I thought it would go. But recently I cut it even more. I am amazed that I could do that. There is a few things that I am now doing and it is keeping my food budget even lower. I have stopped cooking at least 2 nights a week. I have a busy schedule with sports and the kids school. I would in the past start a soup or chili in the morning so it could be prepared by the time we would get back on our busy night. Now I do not cook any longer on those nights. Tonight we all had a tuna sandwich and some fresh fruit slices and some carrots with ranch. This worked out perfect as I had about 3 carrots left, and the ranch was leftover. Some fruit that should have been eaten, I sliced it and put in a large bowl so it looked nice. My kids put peanut butter on their fruit. And tuna sandwhich. This was so quick and easy and we ate on a paper towel, so no dishes either.

Other nights our dinner has been leftover mac-n-chs and a hot dog, or quesidillas. We have just put a potato in the microwave and toped with leftover vegies and cheese. Any sandwiches work great, or leftover pasta tossed with some salad dressing for a pasta salad. This has saved money because I am not purchasing a meat for this nights dinner. Even at a dollar a pound, that is what I get most meats I buy in bulk. If we use one pound, sometimes more, we are saving $8-$10 a month. That is just for the meat portion of the meal. Then also saving what ever else I may plan for that meal, beans, rice or whatever. It gives us the chance to use up our leftovers and eat up what will go bad, and it saves dishes being done and a stressful night to get dinner on the table.
